Would Ovarian Cancer Be Detected During Pregnancy?
Just curious, but is ovarian cancer detected during routine exams for pregnancy? I have a lot of cancer in my family and although I’ve always had clear pap results, I am 13 weeks pregnant and was wondering how this type of cancer is detected. Does anyone know?
Whenever they do the first sonogram at the very first appointment you go to at your obgyn they look at your ovaries so I think if there was an issue it would be detected. If you are really concerned though just ask your doctor..im sure she would be more than willing to check it out for you.
Pap smears have nothing to do with ovarian cancer–they test for cervical cancer. Ovarian cancer is generally detected via ultrasound examination of the ovaries. If something suspicious is found, then they send you for other tests, but they can’t do some of those tests during pregnancy. There is a blood test too, but that test can’t be used during pregnancy because the pregnancy messes up the test results.
Bottom line: sounds to me like you’re just worrying to worry, but you have no reason to be suspicious that you might have ovarian cancer–a disease very unusual in someone your age. There can be a family tendency towards ovarian cancer, but only if other relatives have had ovarian or breast cancer.
