So I Have Been Complaining…now I Have the cause…What Is the Typical Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts?
Last week I started complaining of severe dull pressure like cramps on my left side….I have been on my first month of birth control and just finished my placebos…so I thought…well this must just be the pill…however these cramps kept on getting worse…and when I started on my next pack of birth control…they were horrible….My doctor sent me for an ultrasound..and there it was…A large follicle cyst on my left ovary. Since the pain was getting worse on the pill…I stopped taking it…the pain is gone now…but now I am sitting with slightly swollen breasts a week after a normal placebo period…Is this a side effect of stopping the pill…or is this the cyst..and could the birth control have caused the cyst…I never had ovarian cysts before the pill????
Some functional ovarian cysts (like your follicle cyst) have no symptoms and are discovered, if at all, during routine pelvic exams. Others can cause symptoms, including changes in the menstrual cycle, including shorter or longer periods, skipped periods, and/or spotting between periods, pelvic pain or ache (like the pain you have been feeling on your left side), especially during sexual intercourse or at the start or finish of menstruation, feelings of nausea or queasiness or breast tenderness.
I have suffered from many bilateral ovarian cysts over the past 10 years and have had surgery 2 times to have them removed (once for a 7.7cm x 8.1cm functional cyst and the other time for an endometrioma cyst when I got diagnosed with endometriosis).
Although most doctors believe that being on the pill will prevent ovarian cysts, I had experienced getting an ovarian cyst while I was on the pill earlier this year too. I don’t think that your birth control pill caused you to get an ovarian cyst, but if you are on a low dose birth control pill, it could very well be that you still ovulated, since I have learned from my gyn that sometimes (rare) low dose birth control pills doesn’t completely supress ovulation and this is why he believes I got the ovarian cyst while I was on the pill.
I would recommend that if you have any concerns or questions that you consult with your doctor/gyn for further evaluation.
Good luck
