Ovarian Tumor?
My wife was found to have an ovarian tumor which formed in the three months between her sonograms. This was almost a year ago. She has been scheduled twice for total hysterectomy, and both times, for various reasons, the surgery wasn’t done. Her gyn did a ca125 back when this first started, and just now has ordered another. The first came back negative. Do you think that the doc should have been keeping a closer eye on this??? Any one with experience with benign ovarian tumors??
Yes, I think the doctor should have kept a better check on the tumor. Even if it is a "simple"/"functional" cyst (http://tinyurl.com/fdjd7), the doctor should monitor the size of the tumor. I don’t know what kind of cyst she has, but if it is large, torsion (http://tinyurl.com/lk5rq), albeit rare, may be a concern, which would be extremely painful.
I had a simple one just a few months ago (which has since dissipated after starting birth control pills), and my doctor requested that I come back within a few months, just to monitor the situation. This type of cyst can get larger until it eventually goes away, unfortunately, another one can develop just as easily.
The problems you describe could also cause other problems with hormone regulation, which could cause depression, amongst other problems. Again, this should be monitored. Did they do blood tests to check those levels or recommend an endocrinologist?
Additionally, I have other experience with ovarian cysts/tumors. I had a softball-sized dermoid tumor removed, and I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
Statistically, ovarian tumors are typically benign, so I’m not sure why the doctor would want to do another CA125. I’m sure they will do a biopsy of the tumor once they take it out, but if they already determined that it is benign, it would seem like a redundant test.
