Is It True That Most OVARIAN CYSTS Are Benign (Harmless)?
Am I being too complacent in believing that you can basically let them be without taking medicines for treatment or undergoing laparoscopy (surgical removal)? Should I take them seriously? I’ve been told women get them all the time and they’re nothing to be worried about.
Yes, that is correct. Typically, ovarian cysts are functional (not disease or cancer related) and occur as a normal process of ovulation. During the days before ovulation, a follicle grows. But at the time of expected ovulation, the follicle fails to break open and release an egg, as it is supposed to. Instead, the fluid within the follicle remains and forms a cyst.
Functional, or physiological, ovarian cysts usually disappear within 8-12 weeks without treatment. They are relatively common, and are more common during a woman’s childbearing years (puberty to menopause). Ovarian cysts are rare after menopause.
Functional ovarian cysts are not the same as ovarian tumors (including ovarian cancer) or cysts due to hormone-related conditions such as polycystic ovarian disease. Some non-functional ovarian cysts must be treated to go away.
An ovarian cyst can cause pain if it pushes on nearby structures, ruptures or bleeds. Pain may also occur if the cyst is twisted or causes twisting (torsion) of the fallopian tube.
Some functional ovarian cysts have no symptoms and are discovered, if at all, during routine pelvic exams. Others can cause symptoms, including changes in the menstrual cycle, including shorter or longer periods, skipped periods, and/or spotting between periods, pelvic pain or ache, especially during sexual intercourse or at the start or finish of menstruation, feelings of nausea or queasiness or breast tenderness.
I would recommend that if you think you have an ovarian cyst that you consult with your doctor/gyno about this and ask them to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
I have suffered from many bilateral ovarian cysts over the past 10 years and have surgery 2 times to have them removed (it wasn’t anything too serious).
I hope this helps to answer your question. Good luck
it’s nothing serious but you do have to visit a doctor…he may tell you not to take medicine and just wait till they will disappear…A lot of women have such cysts and they are harmless…I used to have one after my first period and the doctor said it’s really common and it disappeared without medication
They are harmless. The most they will do to you is make you bleed a lot. In that case then they have to be removed, my mom is getting this done, but your only off of work for 2 days so its not bad at all. Dont stress, sometimes that makes things seem worse.
Hope this helps!
It’s best you see a doctor just to confirm that you are ok. I once had a cyst and terrible pain during my period. I went to see a gynae to get a scan and she told me that as it was small, i did not need surgery then. If it did not grow any bigger, I could just leave it. 2 years later when I went to see her, she told me that the cyst had disappeared!
My point here is, go see a gynae just to let yourself know the state of your condition so that you can have a peace of mind.
What you were told is true. Most times they are harmless, and 99.99999% of the time they’re benign. They can however, cause a great deal of pain. Some cysts can become pendunculated..meaning they can grow as though they’re on a stock. That stock can become twisted…thereby cutting off the circulation to the cyst(s), & causing great pain. In cases such as this, surgery may very well be necessary. Most cysts will disappear on their own without any trouble, but again, there are some cysts that can grow to a very large size & because of their size, they need to be removed.
