Are These Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts or Something More Serious?

Warning: This is going to have some gross details.

I’m 24, and I have a son who is 14 months old. For the first few months after he was born I had irregular periods but for the past 6 months they’ve been normal.

My LMP started on April 12. The first day seemed pretty normal. That night I put on an overnight pad like I usually do. Usually I don’t need one that big because I don’t bleed until I get up in the morning to go to the bathroom. The next morning, the sheets were bloody. I had completely soaked the pad and it leaked through my pants. When I got to the bathroom huge clots started coming out. If they were all put together, they would probably have equaled the size of an egg. I’ve never had something like this happen, so I called my mom and told her about it. She said the same thing had happened to her every period for a few years before she hit menopause. She used to sleep with a hospital pad under her because she would always leak. So I just wrote it off as something unusual but nothing to worry about. It was pretty heavy till the next day, but it lasted longer than my periods usually do. Usually they last about six days, and this lasted about 9. Still, nothing to really worry about. Then 2 days ago, I woke up and had what I thought was gas pains. It was sharp and in my lower abdomen. It stopped about 5 minutes later, and I got up and went about my day. Later, I was standing in the bathroom fixing my hair when I felt something warm come out. I checked, and it was blood. Bright red. Occasionally, I’ve had a small amount of breakthrough bleeding, rarely pink, usually brown. This was bright red, and there was more than a small amount. About 2 tbsp came out. An hour later, it had stopped completely. Later that day, I had a weird mood swing. I was feeling really anxious, like I was having an anxiety attack or something. I’ve never felt like that before and it was kind of scary to feel that way and not know why. Yesterday and today I’ve spotted a little. It’s all been bright red. Also, I’ve felt a little nauseous twice in the past couple of days, but both times were after I ate something so it may not be anything to worry about. Also I’ve had occasional sharp throbbing pains on both sides of my lower abdomen but it didn’t last long enough or hurt enough to worry me.
We’ve had unprotected sex on day 7 of my LMP, but that was the only time unprotected. Maybe pregnancy would explain the weird spotting and mood swings, but it doesn’t explain why my lmp was so heavy.
I’m thinking this may have happened because of an ovarian cyst rupturing. I’m going to see an obgyn soon for a checkup, but I’m wondering if maybe all this may point to something more serious. Have any ideas?

That might have been a spontaneous abortion of an early pregnancy of only a few weeks. Alternatively, it could be just some hormone irregularity. I don’t think it’s a ruptured cyst because what you experienced isn’t what would occur with a ruptured cyst. First of all, a rupturing cyst is enormously painful. You’d have been doubled over with pain for a long time. Then, the fluid from the cyst isn’t blood except in rare circumstances. And it’s not going to flow through your fallopian tubes, into your uterus, and then through your vagina, nor will it have big clots. You COULD currently have a cyst which is causing irregularities. It’s probably nothing serious to worry about but it’s good that you’re seeing a doctor. These things should always be checked out.
